Wally Szczerbiak lets his game do the talking. And his mouth

January 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Credit to Jayda Evans of the Seattle Times for
passing this along on her blog
. She’s reporting that two writers from Oklahoma City’s Oklahoman newspaper were …

" … dispatched to Dallas, which is about 200-miles south of
OKC, to begin work on features. One is a "get to know your Sonics"
type piece where every player is expected to be profiled.

Don’t know when the paper will get F
Wally Szczerbiak, though. When the idea was explained to him, he gave a crazy
look and a firm ‘No’ to the interview request. Szczerbiak also declined to speak
to locals following the game, however, stating he didn’t want to say anything
that would get him ‘fined or suspended.’

‘I’ll just let my game do the
talking.’

Nice. And what game. And how it talks!

Now, there are a few ways to take this. One has Wally oblivious to the
location of the newspaper the reporters work for, steamed at his teammates
after another SuperSonics loss, and passing on talking to anyone because his
"game" was the only one that showed up that night for fear of hurting feelings.

Another sees Wally as rightfully on the side of the city of Seattle
in the "where will the SuperSonics land?"
guessing game, and refusing to talk to two Oklahoma City reporters out of principal principle.

The last, and my personal favorite, pits Wally Szczerbiak in a personal,
as-yet-untold battle between himself and the Oklahoman. I want to assume that he hates the paper for some random
reason. Like he was scrolling along the internets a few years ago, saw some
op-ed piece about some local zoning restrictions, and developed a slow burn
which led to his outright enmity for the newspaper.

That’s what I want to believe. That’s the world I want to live in.
